Tiivistelmä
The study aims to identify alternative options nurses can implement while caring for patients with chronic pain by finding new knowledge about pain management to educate patients regarding chronic pain. The research questions are: What is the role of nurses in pain management? What is the role of nurses in patient education regarding chronic pain?
Dorothea Orem's Theory was applied to guide nurses on how to support the
independence of chronic pain patients in applying self-care. A qualitative study was using content analysis method to analyse data and inductive approach to categorize information into themes.
The results indicated two leading roles of nurses that are key in caring for patients with chronic pain; Nursing knowledge and clinical competencies in chronic pain and patient education regarding chronic pain. In conclusion, nurses as caregivers should be skilled and knowledgeable about nursing best practices on chronic pain management for the beneficial treatment of chronic pain patients which leads to empowerment of patients to access self-management interventions.
