The purpose of this thesis was to make Somali translations for three patient instructions from the reproductive medicine unit and to create a translation card with commonly used terms in the unit in Somali and Finnish. Patient instructions are an important part of patient guidance, and patient instructions translated into other languages are currently limited, but increasingly in need.
The aim of the thesis was to produce Somali translations for the unit, which increase patient safety and communication with Somali infertility patients. The purpose with the translations is to increase Somali patients understanding about the different stages of treatments and promote patient well-being.
The thesis consists of a written part and translations. The written theoretical framework contains information on the language, culture and family of Somali patients. We also went through the history of infertility treatment, the causes of infertility in women and men, various treatments for infertility, legislation, patient safety and guidance, and patient instructions.
As a result of our thesis the translations were made. The translations were done together using our own mother tongue skills and Finnish-Somali-Finnish dictionary. We received three translatable patient instructions from the reproductive medicine unit and we made a translation card of the terms they brought up and added to them our own terms that we felt were necessary like periods, pregnancy and miscarriage.
