Keskeisten osa-alueiden yhtäläisyyksiä tarkastellaan suhteessa psykofyysisen teatterin teoriaan ja harjoittamisen muotoihin; Jerry Grotowskin näyttelijän ei-tekniikkaan ja Song of the Goat Theatren harjoitteluun.
This study is a partial fulfillment of the Theatre and Drama Instructor's Degree/Bachelor of Theatre, at the Turku University of Applied Sciences, Ltd. This thesis is a study about the performer's body. It researches how practicing techniques related to somatic methods are connected to contemporary acting. This thesis examines the realization of contemporary acting and its physical dimension which is in relation to working both as a contemporary actor and a contemporary dancer. The information is gathered through written source material and the author's own experience. The aim of the thesis is to structure the author's experience in relation to existing knowledge and theory, and to give a comprehensive picture of the relation of practicing different techniques to contemporary acting and the performer's body through the thesis's perspective.
First the thesis discusses the existential dimension of the performance and the work of the performer in the framework of the new paradigm of dance and post-dramatic theatre, as well as the relationship of somatic method's approaches to contemporary acting. The similarities between the key areas are examined against the theories and forms of practice of the psychophysical theatre; Jerry Grotowski's actor's non-technique and the Song of the Goat Theater ensemble. After that the thesis opens approaches and effects of Alexander Technique, Authentic Movement and Contact-improvisation. The third chapter deals with such elements as imagination and tune related to the performer's body, as well as their connection to practices described in the previous chapters.
The end result is that practicing through these methods affects the body's organization and the strengthening of the body-mind connection. These are in relation to contemporary acting where observing and conceptualizing happens in the area of body sensations. These methods and their effects are linked to imagination and tune sensitization as part of the performer's body point of view, as well as to the physical understanding before the thematizing knowledge.
