Tiivistelmä
Tyypin 1 diabetes on yksi nopeimmin Suomessa yleistyvistä sairauksista erityisesti lapsilla. Sairauden hoito vaatii jatkuvaa seurantaa ja onkin hyvin kuormittavaa lapsen vanhemmille, aiheuttaen heille lisääntynyttä stressiä, ahdistusta ja jopa masennusta. Ammattilaisten antaman hoidon ja tuen lisäksi perheet voivat vertaistuen kautta kokea hyväksyntää, saada emotionaalista tukea sekä ajankohtaista tietoa ja käytännön vinkkejä diabeteksen hoitoon. Vertaistuen hyödyistä perheille on kuitenkin saatu ristiriitaisia tuloksia.
Type 1 diabetes is one of the most rapidly increasing illnesses in Finland, especially among children. The treatment of the illness requires constant monitoring, and it is therefore very challenging for the parents of the child, causing them to suffer from increased stress, anxiety and even depression. In addition to the treatment and support from professionals, peer support can offer families an experience of acceptance, emotional support, along with up-to-date information and practical advice about treating diabetes. However, there have been contradictory results about the benefits of peer support for the families.
The purpose of the thesis was to examine what kind of peer support and peer activities families with children with type 1 diabetes feel they would need in Central Finland. The aim of the study was to highlight the families’ need of peer support, so that The Diabetes Association of Central Finland could offer services that would meet the families’ needs, and so that the professionals treating the families could guide them to find peer support at the appropriate time.
The data was collected through an electronic Webropol-survey which consisted of 19 questions. 46 out of 300 families in Central Finland answered the survey. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in analysing the data.
According to the results, most of the families felt that they needed peer support. The demand for support varied significantly but was generally greatest in the beginning of the illness, when caring for a school-aged child or adolescent and in challenging situations, such as infections. Most families wanted to meet face-to-face, in other words, in the form of activities or conversations, but also the significance of the internet and social media was highlighted. A small portion of the families did not need peer support at all.
The results of the thesis can be utilized by The Diabetes Association of Central Finland to develop the content and the right timing of peer support and activities for families in cooperation with the healthcare professionals.
