Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, kuinka äidit kokivat kohtukuolemaa seuraavan raskauden, minkälaista tukea he tuona aikana saivat, sekä minkälaista tukea he jäivät kaipaamaan.
Having a stillbirth is a difficult experience for the mother; it often leads to fear and anxiety, also in the subsequent pregnancy. Mothers require more emotional support and wish for frequent assurances of the well-being of their baby.
The purpose of the study was to investigate how mothers experience the subsequent pregnancy after stillbirth, what kind of support they received and what kind of support they were left wanting. The objective of the study was to produce information to help healthcare professionals understand the special characteristics of subsequent pregnancies after stillbirth as well as mothers’ experiences of it and what kind of support they were left wanting. The study also offers informational peer support to parents in revealing how others have experienced the subsequent pregnancy after stillbirth.
The study design was qualitative, and the research material was collected via a questionnaire. The research material consisted of 36 mothers’ experiences of a subsequent pregnancy after experiencing stillbirth in their previous pregnancy.
The findings of the study suggest that the subsequent pregnancy was seen as a difficult time from the mothers’ perspective and included fear and ambivalent feelings. Mothers felt that they received the greatest support from parental clinics, from peer support as well as family and friends. On the other hand, mothers felt that the healthcare professionals as well as family and friends often lacked the ability of showing them proper empathy and in taking the mothers’ fears seriously. The study’s findings also suggest that mothers felt especially disappointed in encountering with their doctors.
