This thesis was conducted as a development work thesis. The purpose was to create communication folders for two adult clients who have autism spectrum disorders and to increase their use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ACC). The folders also include communication passports. The outcome of the development work was a laminated guide for creating a communication folder as well as a communication passport. The guide was created for the assisted living facility which commissioned the thesis, in which the clients reside. The guide was then evaluated with the feedback acquired from the staff of the facility in writing.
After the development work, a research was conducted in order to define whether or not the use of alternative communication skills increased among the clients with the help of the communication folders. The research was conducted by using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The amount of communication situations was assessed by observing the clients before, and ten weeks after the introduction of the communication folder. The results were then tabulated, after which the first and last measurements were compared in order to examine the changes between them, as well as if the clients’ communication had increased.
In addition to the observation of the clients, the research included a written questionnaire that was distributed to the staff of the assisted living facility, in which they were asked to asses whether the clients’ alternative communication skills had improved with the use of the communication folders in their opinion. The questionnaires also examined other possible benefits of the folders. The results of the closed-ended questions were presented in quantitative form by examining their distribution, while the open-ended questions were examined by dividing them by theme.
In conclusion, the results of both the observation of the clients as well as the questionnaires indicate that the communication of the clients did not increase between the first and last measurements. The questionnaires however did locate a minority, according to whom one of the client’s communication had in fact improved. The results also indicate that both of the clients used the folders consistently during the research process.
