The aim of the thesis was to investigate the use of eddy current technology in detecting corrosion under insulation at Neste's Naantali refinery. The suitability of the method was tested by practical tests on two test tubes, one pipeline field target and a LPG tank’s fireproofed leg.
The theoretical part consists of the mechanisms of the formation of corrosion under the insulation, and where it usually occurs. The theoretical part also discusses the most common inspection methods for detecting corrosion under insulation, but the focus is on eddy current technology.
The sources of the theoretical part are mainly the publications of the American Oil and Gas Association (API), the publication of the European Corrosion Association (EFCP), and the worldwide expert community publications (NACE), freely translated by the author of the thesis. In addition to eddy current technology, the thesis examined the most common inspection methods for detecting corrosion under insulation and presented the pros and cons of various methods.
The validation of the method and the standards for the validation of the proficiency test are based on API 563. The API 563 approval standard is for the tank bottom plate, but it is also suitable for piping.
The thesis provided information on the applicability of eddy current technology to the refinery for detecting corrosion under insulation. Based on the information presented in this work, a valid assessment of the suitability of the method and its possible introduction at the refinery can be made. The thesis presents the limitations of the method that should be considered when performing the inspections.
