The subject of the thesis is based on my own interest, i.e. massively multiplayer online games known as shorter MMO games. The online gaming business is growing rapidly worldwide, and per-haps one reason is that online games are free or cheap, and players can play them anywhere, anytime.
The aim of the thesis is to find the essential factors that influence the players' motivations to play MMO games. MMO games also play an important role in their social aspect which, for example, makes it possible to establish friendships within the game. The thesis examines various features of sociality that occur in MMO games. The purpose of the work is also to find those factors that influence the loyalty of players to the MMO game. Keeping players in the game for a long time is a sign of the success of the MMO game.
The descriptive literature review is used as a tool for the thesis. The knowledge learned through the literature review will be used in a questionnaire research carried out on the Internet with the help of the Webropol Survey tool. The aim of the survey is to find and reflect on the similarities found with the information collected through the literature review. The survey shows that the most motivating factors in the MMO game are the mechanics of the game for men and the progress for women in the game. Most do not play MMO games alone but through real-life social connections – the results also show the transfer of friendships created from MMO games to real life. Chats and communities offered in MMO games are important for gamers – most of the players join to these communities and they use chats regularly. The MMO game pricing model does matter because it affects the players’ willingness to play the game – the pricing model determines what kinds of users the game has. The gameplay of the MMO game has the greatest impact on gaming and its continuity. Other important factors were the quality of the game and the service provided, as well as the good control of the character, sufficient challenges of the game and the growth of the game character.
The result of this thesis is a summary of the topic that can be used as a small guide in the future, for example in the gaming industry or as a teaching material for those interested in MMO games. Due to the versatility of the source materials used for the thesis work, some of the information must be left out of the thesis. In this case, the development opportunity would be to continue expanding the guide, especially the importance of age and gender differences in the motivation, loyalty and social networking of MMO players.
