Football is categorized as an open skill sport demanding fast reactions in regard to opponents and teammates. Skilled players excel at extracting visual information from their surroundings and at making fast appropriate decisions based on their perceptions. In a ideal situation the player has already made his mind about the forthcoming action even before receiving the ball.
The objective of the thesis was to advance perceptual-motor and decision making training as part of children´s football training by making video instructions of selected perceptual-motor exercises. The videos were created for the use of children´s football coaches. The client of the thesis was Football club Kuusysi Lahti.
The thesis consisted of a theoretic report and the video exercises. The theoretic report addressed the effects of perceptual-motor and decision making skills on children´s motor and sensory motor development and the importance of the visual system regarding perception based sensory information. Especially the importance of peripheral vision was well addressed. The video instructions were created on the grounds of the theoretic basis. The instructions were created in video format at the client’s request.
Perceptual-motor training doesn´t only concern the athletic children. Children with executive function disorders and attention deficits, or children who have trouble using visual sensory system for observing their environment, can also benefit from the exercises. Perceptual-motor games and drills are well suited for group training and the exercises also improve decision making skills. The exercises are also suitable for group-based physiotherapy or comprehensive school physical education class when slightly altered.
