This thesis is part of a broader enterprise relating to a working capital reduction project that lasted end of the year of 2018. The aim of the project was to reduce the stock capital and costs resulting from it at Stora Enso Ltd Varkaus Mill, leaving money from the budget for other uses.
The aim of this thesis was to clarify the usefulness of the company’s maintenance spare parts. The purpose was to find the items to be scrapped and to determine the amount and benefit of the sum of the items to be removed in order to reduce storage costs in the long run. The items consumption reports were used to identify the connection between the maintenance spare parts, the equipment and various outlets to find out whether scrapping was possible.
The possibility of scrapping the items was mapped by examining the bindings of the items and identifying their usage history from recent years. Solutions were searched with the maintenance information system, and by interviewing maintenance and storage personnel. The thesis also assessed the profitability of scrapping and the risks involved.
As a result, six items with a request for scrapping were found in the titles. The aim is to remove these spare part items from the Stora Enso and Efora spare part catalogue database. However, since the company has set goals for a longer-term performance targets the results cannot entirely be used for measuring the final number of items to be scrapped.
