Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää Aivoliiton Juttu-tuvissa käyvien, afasiaa sairastavien henkilöiden läheisten ajatuksia ja mielipiteitä Juttu-tupaan liittyen. Juttu-tupa-toiminta on Aivoliiton hallinnoimaa ryhmämuotoista kurssitoimintaa afasiaa sairastaville ihmisille.
Työn tilaaja on Aivoliitto.
The goal of this thesis was to survey the thoughts and opinions of close relatives, friends, spouses and other people close to people with aphasia, concerning Juttu-tupa events. Juttu-tupa events comprise group-based course activities for people with aphasia, organized by The Finnish Brain Association. The purpose of Juttu-tupa events is to support communication and participatory engagement of people with aphasia in order to prevent social exclusion. The most important perspectives Juttu-tupa events provide are peer support and encouragement to communicate.
The thesis was commissioned by The Finnish Brain Association, which represents people who have specific language impairment or have suffered a stroke. These conditions affect approximately 20 000 people in Finland every year, and a third of the people experiencing them will develop aphasia.
A questionnaire was made to gather the opinions of the target group of the study. The wishes and needs of the commissioning party had a strong effect on the structure of the questionnaire, as The Finnish Brain Association was specifically interested in the results of questions that allowed open-text field responses. The questionnaire was sent to 83 persons close to Juttu-tupa participants, out of which a total of 59 responded to the questionnaire. The responses showed that the respondents have a very positive view on the Juttu-tupa events. The respondents openly shared their experiences on the everyday challenges related to the aphasia of the person close to them.
The data was analyzed using thematic analysis and data-driven content analysis. Improvement in using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication, peer support and improvement suggestions by the questionnaire respondents were some of the phenomena observed in the responses. The data showed that the respondents were satisfied with the Juttu-tupa events and considered them meaningful and important for both them and the person with aphasia. The answers to the background questions demonstrated that many of the respondents had noticed a positive development in the communication of the person with aphasia after participating in the Juttu-tupa events.
