The company this study was made for was Pentik Oy. The aim of this thesis was to examine the current level of employee orientation at Pentik Oy using qualitative research and to find areas where there is room for improvement as well as to study the strengths of the current orientation program and also detect important matters regarding the new orientation plan. An important element of this thesis was also the creation of the new orientation plan for new employees. The orientation plan also works as an assisting tool for both the orientator as well as the new employee.
The theoretical study examined the current theories regarding employee orientation. The beginning of the theoretical study includes a short introduction to human resource management and the most important theories in its field. That was followed by crucial theories regarding employee orientation, for example internal marketing and the goals, importance, benefits and legalities of orientation. After that the orientation process and its phases was examined as well as job induction. The final chapter of the theoretical study was about orientation planning. The theories used in the theoretical study were very diverse, ranging from planning of the orientation, to the implementation. The research was made qualitative. Theme interviews were used as the interview method. In total eight people were interviewed, of whom four were supervisors and four were employees.
The research showed that both the supervisors and the employees longed for more structure and time for the orientation. They also were of the opinion that it would be important to ensure that the new employees had learned the required matters. Both the supervisors as well as the new employees had slightly different experiences and opinions about the orientation but some similarities were also found. The research also showed that there is much to be improved regarding the current orientation program, even though most of the responders were reasonably satisfied regarding the matter.
