In this dissertation I am describing my own experiences as an artist during a community-based theatre process. The experiences I examine occurred during the making of a performance called “On kirkkaana päivä ja ilta – vanhan miehen tunnustukset/And the day and the night are bright – old man’s confessions”.
My goal was to build up a community-based performance in cooperation with three artists in 2017. We aimed to center on thoughts and experiences of aging men, and to make the performance accessible to senior citizens. All the material, stories and experiences used in the performance, were collected from senior men living in Pirkanmaa region by means of interviews and group activities.
In the dissertation I am also defining my artistic identity in the field of applied arts and art education. I focus on reflecting community-based theatre as an art form using the experiences which I had during the artistic and production process. I also reflect on the changing roles of the community artist during the process.
At the end of the artistic process we executed a theatre performance, which gave a voice to all of our twenty participants. The performance respected all the stories, giving center stage to the old men’s thoughts about the world and about life itself. Although the men, who were involved in the artistic process, did not participate as performers in the final performance, we were able to make our predefined artistic bases play an important role throughout the performance. The performance reached audiences of different age groups, in conventional and unconventional environments, such as nursing homes, in Pirkanmaa region, but also all around Finland. The performance was played 17 times by June 2018. The performance got positive feedback from the audience. The subject and the form encouraged the audience to meet each other and discuss about the situation in eldercare in Finland today.
