The thesis addresses children that have been placed in fos-ter care and their contact with the families of origin. It’s commissioned by the city of Raasepori that is part of the nationwide project LAPE (Lapsi- ja perhepalveluiden muutosohjelma). LAPE is a pro-gram aiming to develop children's and family services in Finland to better relate to the needs and opinions of children and families. The aim of this study is to contribute to a greater understanding of how children placed in care experience contact with the family of origin. The research question is: What experiences do children who have been placed in foster care have regarding contact with the family of origin? The previous research regarding contact between children and the family of origin primarily addresses the perspective of social workers, parents or other adults, children's and adolescents' subjective experiences of contact with the family of origin are not highlighted to the same extent. Therefore, the selection of articles in this thesis is limited to include only articles in which children and adolescents in the age range 8–17 years express themselves. The method of the study is a general literature study where the data consists of eleven scientific articles analysed using content analysis. The thesis is based on social pedagogical theory, focusing on participation and relationships. The result shows that children and adolescents have very different experiences of contact with the family of origin. Therefore, it is impossible to under-stand children and adolescents placed in foster care as a homogeneous group, the needs of each child and the desire for contact with the family of origin must be taken into consideration by both foster parents and social workers. By creating an open climate both in and outside the home where children and adolescents feel free to express themselves and their feelings, we also promote the child's chance of participation and self-determination.
