Examensarbete
Bachelor´s thesis
The purpose of this study is to describe how the parents’ life situations change after their child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and the challenges the parents might face. The questions asked in this study are: What challenges do parents of a child with type 1 diabetes
face? How does the child’s disease affect the family?
The theoretical basis used in this study is The Roy Adaptation Model by Callista Roy. The model describes how the human needs to adapt to different circumstances and changes, without losing balance in life. In the theoretical background evidence based literature, internet sources
and previous scientific research have been used.
This is a qualitative interview study based on nine interviews with a total of ten interviewees.
The interviews have been processed using qualitative content analysis, and from this process themes,
categories and subcategories emerged.
The result of the study has been compared with the theoretical basis, background and previous research. The result shows that the biggest challenges the parents face are the insecurity they constantly must live with, the despair they must process, the limitations the disease brings to both the child and the rest of the family, and the adaptation needed for the new lifestyle. The child’s disease affects the routines of the whole family, their habits and possibilities, and the burden caused by the disease often leads to mental stress.
Development procjet
The purpose of this study is to chart the fields in the parents’ surroundings they experience having received support from, what kind of support they have received and what kind of support they wish they would’ve got. The question asked in this study is: What kind of support have the parents received in their experience and what kind of support do they wish they would’ve got?
The theoretical basis used in this study is Joanne Duffy’s Quality Caring Model. The model is describing the care needed for achieving satisfaction among patients. By involving care in the relationship with the patient you reach a result that is promoting the health of the patient as well as the family. In the theoretical background evidence based literature and previous scientific research have been used.
This is a qualitative study that is based on the Bachelor’s thesis “If we get through this, we will get through anything” (Nummela, et.al. 2017), an interview study based on nine interviews and a total of ten informants. The interviews have been processed using qualitative content analysis, and from this process categories and subcategories emerged. The result of the study has been compared with the theoretical basis, background and previous research.
The result shows what support the parents experience receiving and what kind of support they wish they would’ve got. The parents experienced receiving support from the following four fields in their surroundings: health care, those nearest, the family’s social network and school and daycare. From the result an information writing was made, containing advice and experiences for other parents in the same situation.
