To have problems with sleep is a common thing in today´s society. In some cases, this problem leads to having to resort to take sleep medication. In this study I briefly describe sleep, sleep problems, common sleep medications and alternative treatments.
The purpose of this study was to investigate people´s experiences of sleep medication and provide healthcare professionals with a better understanding of how people feel when taking sleep medication.
This study was done in the form of qualitative method with empirical features, where I with content analysis reflect on experiences of sleep medication written in online forums. Four online forums were used in this study. The theoretical starting point in this study is Martin Seligman's theory of learned helplessness.
The experiences of sleep medication were varied, there were positive experiences in which sleep medication fit and gave no or few side effects and the subjects could carry on with their everyday life, and then there were negative experiences where sleep medications caused physical and mental symptoms.
