The purpose of this thesis is to increase the public health nurse's understanding of how the client experience a lifestyle change and what can increase his motivation towards a lifestyle change. The questions of this thesis are: What can motivate the client to a healthy lifestyle change? How can the public health nurse support persons who want to do a healthy lifestyle change? What advice would a person who has succeeded give a person who is about to deal with his lifestyle? What advantages with a healthy lifestyle change can a person who has suc-ceeded see?
As theoretical frame of reference we have used Aaron Antonovsky's theory of KASAM and James Prochaska's transtheoretical model, TTM. In the theoretical background is described healthy diet- and exercise habits, weight control, abuse, stress management, sleep and pas-times as a base in a healthy lifestyle. It is also described the advantages of a healthy lifestyle, motivation, passion, the public health nurse's part in the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and how the public health nurse can bring the question of lifestyle up. Previous research that is used in this thesis connects to the subject from two point of views: With studies about fac-tors that improves the ability to do a lifestyle change and with theories about the ability to do a lifestyle change.
The study has been done using qualitative method. The respondents to this thesis have interview seven mutually different persons, who have succeeded to change their life-style. The result describes the informants' experience of the process of change: how it has started, what individual goals they've had, what advantages the change have brought and how they look at the future with the new lifestyle. The result also describes factors of motivation, which have helped the informants during the process, from where they've gotten support and what advice they would give – to others who have a lifestyle change ahead of them and also to public health nurse's and other health professionals.
