The aim of this study was to describe work against domestic violence on the Aaland islands and how the institutional professionals experience the police's work in cases involving violence in close relationships. The research questions were: How do institutional professionals experience the cooperation with the Police Authority of the Aaland islands today? How do professionals experience the work of domestic violence today?
The degree thesis was made as a phenomenological survey, based on current research, working methods and statistics. The current theoretical background is supplemented with four open interviews with institutional professionals. Phenomenography as a research method describes individuals' views of a phenomenon. The respondents are working on
the Aaland islands in different authorities where they come into contact with people who are prone to violence in close relationships. These authorities cooperate with the the Aaland islands Police Authority. The interviews were discussed in a content analysis and the result is based on the interviews compared with the previous research.
The results show that cooperation between authorities is of great importance for helping people out of a relationship with violence, as well as for preventing violence in close relationships. At present there are no statistics on how many are prone to violence in close relationships on the Aaland islands, but the interviews showed that violence occurs in close relationships, on the Aaland islands too. According to the respondents, statistics are not significantly different from statistics made in Sweden and Finland. Statistics show that about one fifth of the population is exposed to some form of violence in a close relationship. The unrecorded number of violence in close relationships is large. In order to investigate and prevent violence in close relationships, authorities need to intervene in situations where violence occurs and that they recognize and have knowledge of violence in close relationships. The results also show that multi-professional work between authorities is important to discover, investigate and prevent violence in close relationships.According to the respondents the cooperation between the Aaland islands Police Authorityand other authorities on the Aaland islands are operating satisfactorily.
