The trend in using the open-plan office as an office type seems to be coming back, even though research shows that the employees’ work efficiency can be affected in a negative way. But are there benefits in having this office type? What needs to be thought of when choosing office type and how can one compensate for any shortcomings in the physical working environment?
Our work consists of a qualitative research in which we have interviewed two companies and one entrepreneur in the Aland Islands about the physical working environment and the open- plan office. The research aims to study relevant theory within the physical working environment and to see how a company with an open-plan office has applied this to their organization. We have analyzed the results from the interviews with suitable theory. In conclusion we believe that the open-plan office does not need to be a negative office-type as long as you consider all aspects. If you work in teams and projects the open-plan office might be a suitable choice.
