The purpose of this thesis was to understand the internal heating of an IGBT module inside an AC drive in a system with a regenerative unit to it.
During the implementation of the lab, various approaches were taken in an effort to collect measurements appropriate to the topic of investigation. The IGBT junction temperature was recorded over a sustained period of time at various speed of the induction motor. The braking torque applied through a second AC drive was varied in order to study the effect of a changing torque on the overall temperature of the IGBT module of the AC drive.
With the data collected, one was able to determine the thermal resistance of the IGBT module in the system for a specific speed and torque. At the conclusion of the study, the efficiency of the system was estimated for the sake of understanding the rate at which the energy entering the system was converted into useful work.
