Tiivistelmä
Dementia is a continuous, permanent deterioration in mental functions manifested by deficit in memory and cognitive abilities. These factors escalate the situation of dementia
patients to hazardous incidences of infections and injuries.
The aim of this thesis is to assess and incorporate researched information about the risk factors that bind dementia patients to the most common infections and injuries found on long term. The purpose of this thesis is to have an insight on the mechanisms causing the
decline in dementia patients and to recognize areas which can be acted upon during the care to prevent recurrently occurring infections and injuries in dementia patients.
Data was collected by literature review method. Online databases and articles were used to find contemporary data. The collected data was analysed by the guidelines of content analysis. The found data was read thoroughly and the findings were categorized to determine results.
The results of the thesis suggested numerous risk factors which were grouped under two headings for the purpose of clarity and individually the factors causing infection and
injuries in dementia patients were reviewed and analysed.
