In this thesis work, I strive to explain how I as a cinematographer have used test shoots as a method to find the right visual language for a short film. My purpose is to find a visual language that suits the story and that best presents the main character of the film. In the thesis I explain the process behind the test shoots and the pre-production stage. My intention is to analyse which of the three different test shoots I think best helps present the main character Maartin and through the analysis develop as a cinematographer. Through image analysis I have come to the personal conclusion that the third of the test shoots, i.e. the one where the camera actively follows Maartins movements is the most suitable to the story I am trying to convey as a cinematographer.
