2. De sociala mediers växande betydelse i marknadsföringen. 3. This thesis is a survey of a new media product, the book trailer. A book trailer is an audio-visual advertisement for a book. It derives from and partly follows the same conventions as the established film trailer tradition. In some cases the book trailer can also be viewed as a self-contained short film. The book trailer emerged in the beginning of the 21st century and evolved as a result of three factors connected to the technological developments. 1. The verbal text finds itself increasingly obliged to rely on audio-visual advertising due to the marketing trends that reign in today's society. 2. Social media networks play an increasingly big role in today’s marketing. 3. The declining interest in reading, especially among young people. At the same time the book trailer causes debate as it has been a norm to consider audio-visual media as the verbal media's main competitor – is the book trailer the book's competitor or servant? The book trailer faces a number of challenges, the main one being: The book trailer must create an audio-visual representation of a primary text that is verbal, unlike the film trailer for which the primary text is audio-visual. As a result the book trailer runs a great a risk of limiting the reader's imagination by revealing too much in the trailer. Despite its controversial nature and the fact that the book trailer has existed in its modern form for over ten years, it has not been the target of an extensive survey or scientific research. The purpose of my work is to offer the first comprehensive survey of the book trailer phenomenon and to create a foundation for future research. My survey covers a definition and categorisation of the book trailer, its history, its prospects, its commercial functions and its main challenge – to not limit the reader's imagination by revealing too much. The work is a descriptive and interpretive case study with a qualitative approach. This survey covers only book trailers for fiction literature and excludes audio-visual advertisement for non-fiction. The data has been collected through fieldwork – personal interviews, qualitative questionnaire, observation of virtual and real world environments, as well as a practical project. Due to the lack of scientific literature on the book trailer phenomenon I refer mainly to my own observations, articles and popular cultural texts on the book trailer, and literature on related topics such as marketing, the film trailer tradition, the short film tradition and the literature industry.
