This thesis deals with the difficulties of handling stress in a very performance-based
profession: Acting. The point of the thesis is to illuminate the negative consequences that
may arise for an actor exposed to stress for a longer period of time, and as a result, an
attempt is made to answer the following question: do I have to be under stress in order to
be a good actor?
In the thesis I will reflect upon what it means for me to be a good actor. Based on my
experiences during the process of creating my performance “I can always get better” I will
try to examine why I felt unsatisfied with performance as an actor. I will examine what
stress truly is and what physical and psychological consequences it may create.
Eventually, I arrive at the conclusion that, for me personally, a change of attitude is in
order regarding the art of acting. Hopefully, readers of this thesis will reflect on their own
attitudes towards their work.
