Tiivistelmä
This research was conducted for Tallink Silja Oy, a shipping company in the Baltic Sea region. It has been a market leader, providing its customers quality cruises and transporting cargo between Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Latvia. The objective of this research was to examine passenger and cargo sales of Tallink Silja’s operations between Finland, Sweden and Estonia.
Research methods used consisted of qualitative interviews held for Tallink Silja personnel and data collection of reports. The data collected was used to back up information received from the interviews.
59 % of Tallink Silja’s revenue comes from on board sales, making it the most important source of income. Competition between shipping companies is challenging and prices are kept low to promote sales. It is diffcult to maximize sales and cut costs, but these are areas the company needs to work on constantly. This research describes factors that have affected sales in the past and factors that are also likely to affect in the future. In the end the author gives his own future predictions of the maritime traffic and future recommendations for Tallink Silja Oy.
