The purpose of this thesis is to describe what spirituality means for children under school age. In this thesis there are four formulated questions which are; what is spirituality for children, what are the spiritual needs of children, how does children’s spiritual development take progress and how do children express their spirituality. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the mutual project by defining the spirituality of children; in order for me to contribute with knowledge on my part so that the project can further develop spiritual nursing with children. This thesis is done in cooperation with the multi-professional project Andlighet, spiritualitet och livsfrågor - you name it! This work is a systematic literary study which by a concept analysis compares different theories about the spirituality of children in order to find a probable definition.
The results of this thesis show that the spirituality of children consists of four dimensions within children’s relational consciousness. The first dimension is the spiritual relationship to one self, the individual. The second one is the spiritual relationship to others, the relationships. The third dimension is the spiritual relationship to the surroundings and nature and the fourth one is the spiritual relationship to something “higher”. Within these dimensions there are seven categories which can further explain what is meant by children’s spirituality. These are that it is individual and personal, it is dependent on relationships and other relations, it is founded on finding meaning and purpose in life, it is filled with mystery and wonder, it is a part of the everyday experiences, it is formed by spiritual development and it is seen by the spiritual expressions of children. In this thesis it is also described how the progress of spiritual development looks like, which the different spiritual needs of children are and in which ways the children can express their spirituality. This thesis explains the meaning of spirituality in children in order for the next phase in the project about spirituality to further develop the subject. Some examples of how this could be achieved are described at the end of the thesis.
