Tiivistelmä
The objective of this thesis was to create a new program for the commissioning party Saija Oy. As its working title suggests, the subject of the “Northern lights evening” -program was the Northern lights phenomenon. The program answers to an existing need of the customers of Saija Oy to learn more about the phenomenon. Once finished, the program should also be profitable.
Several theories of product development and experience creation were used to productize the Northern lights phenomenon into a program that could be implemented weekly during the winter season. The product concept was developed in accordance with the preferences of the commissioner. Spending my practical training period in the commissioning company made it possible to test the program concept. After the testing stage it was a mutual decision of me and the commissioner to pursue another option to respond to the customers´ needs.
The key reason for terminating the product development process was the inability for the commissioner to perceive the program profitable as such. The average probability to witness the Northern lights on a cloudless dark night, 35 %, was evaluated not high enough to facilitate a program implemented on a weekly basis. However, if the development was to be continued, suggestions for future development activities are included.
