The purpose of this thesis is to examine the cooperation and communication between the master and the pilot during pilotage in Finnish waters. The survey is limited to include only Finnish pilots and masters of ships that have visited Finland during the fall of 2012.
The survey was sent out electronically to all active pilots in Finland, and about 60 vessels. The pilot’s survey consisted of 16 questions, and the master’s survey consisted of 14 questions, of which 11 questions were similar for both.
The results showed that the pilot’s and master’s cooperation works well, as long as the master is from a European country. The pilots experience language barriers with masters outside of Europe, and experience large variations in their skills. Another problem was the pilot’s reluctance to speak to the VTS in English, despite recommendations from the Finnish Safety Investigation Authority and IMO. The pilots and the masters agree that communication between them is efficient. At the same time pilots feel that masters have difficulties admitting they’re unsure of the situations, while most of the masters imply they always tell the pilot if they’re unsure of the situation.
