The aim of my thesis was to seek the best care methods that prevent alcohol problems in society. The idea was to illuminate acceptable methods against alcohol problems for both policy makers and health professionals in the field. The question I wanted an answer to was: Which preventive care methods are the best in order to avoid diseases and injuries caused by alcohol?
I have used document studies as a method. I compiled all of my articles using a review article and have analyzed them using content analysis. The research was divided into three thematic areas: alcohol prevention methods that improved health, prevention methods that were cost-effective against alcohol abuse, and prevention methods that could be applied against alcohol abuse. These were divided into categories, which gave answers to my questions. Alcohol screening and brief intervention may decrease trauma-related injuries, alcohol consumption, number of episodes of drunkenness, repeated driving under intoxication and trauma recidivism. The preventive paradox illustrates the fact that it is not enough to control a large consumer’s alcohol consumption, but efforts should also be directed to the majority with regards to the damage caused. Alcohol products are price sensitive and this is typically confirmed by the fact that alcohol products, like other consumer products, respond to price. Therefore, there is a strong case from a public health perspective to adjust alcohol taxes in accordance with purchasing power development.
