The European Peoples’ Festival is an intercultural festival intended for the different people of Europe. The participants of the festival represent smaller towns that are part of the European Union. The Festival is not well known outside the member cities and no prior research has been performed on the festival. This thesis is done as an assignment for the Association of Raseborg European Peoples’ Festival r.f.
The purpose of this thesis is to create a so-called festival profile that can be beneficial for the association in regards to future research and marketing. The aim is also to find out what the festival means for its participants and how they believe the host community is affected by hosting a pan-European festival. To achieve this purpose, I participated in the festival in 2011, which was held in Szentendre, Hungary, where I gathered all the relevant information needed for the study. By conducting both observations and personal interviews a deeper understanding was obtained of what the festival means to the participants. To be able to answer how these individuals believe the host community is influenced by the festival, I used the so-called Triple Bottom Line Approach, which evaluates economic, socio-cultural and environmental effects.
The results of this thesis show that the European Peoples’ Festival means a lot to the participants in terms of personal development and the establishment of new friendships. The socio-cultural effects on the host community have been identified as the most significant in this research, which is the purpose of the festival. Furthermore, opportunities for development and suggestions for future studies have been identified.
