Because I have studied cinematography and have worked in the business for a year now, I wanted to look into the cinematographer’s complex work and the problematic business. The main purpose with my work is to give an overall picture of what it takes to be con-sidered as a professional cinematographer and what it takes to get the opportunity to work in this field of profession. My work consists partly of the theory part where I present all the sub areas you should be able to control as a professional cinematographer. The theory part is followed by an analysis of the cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantles work in his feature film Slumdog Millionaire. The reason for the choice is that Anthony won an Os-car for best achievement in cinematography for his work in Slumdog Millionaire. Anoth-er reason for this choice was that I personally thought that Anthony’s work was outstand-ing and innovative, which I also afterwards got confirmed. What my survey shows is that a cinematographer needs to control all the sub areas in the business and to be able to han-dle different kinds of shootings and conditions. If you manage to control this you are per-ceived as a professional cinematographer. Unfortunately the business isn’t that simple. To get the chance to work in the business you need to have strong social contacts with like-minded in the business, since this is one of the aspects when people choose who they want to work with. The creative part is another really essential aspect when it comes to the cinematographer’s field of profession. As a professional cinematographer you need to have knowledge and talent to be able have an insight in visual aesthetics.
