Sammanlagt samlades 105 stycken ifyllda enkäter in som användes i resultatredovisningen.
This thesis was conducted as an assignment by Helsinki Tourist Office. The objective of the study was to find out what kind of image Swedes think that Helsinki as the World Design Capital in 2012. The aim was also to find out if the Swedes knew that Helsinki was the Design Capital, and whether the event made them more interested in visiting Helsinki in 2012. Thus the study also focused on how actively the Design Capital Year was marketed in Stockholm.
The theoretical framework is composed of two main parts, i.e. tourist destinations and place marketing. The chapter on tourist destinations explores how a tourist destination is built, what the various tourist destinations are, and the different types of attractions there. In the chapter on place branding the trade mark and its meaning is discussed, how to brand a location, destination branding and how a destination image is created. The theoretical framework is based on literature, Internet sites, e-mail interviews with experts and newspaper articles.
The empirical part of the work was done using quantitative and qualitative research methods to obtain a large number of respondents and expert opinions on how the World Design Capital was marketed in Stockholm, and how two of the partners mar-keted the Design year. The gathering of material was implemented during the time pe-riod 16.01.2012-16.03.2012 in Stockholm's inner city and by email with the experts. In total 105 completed surveys were returned and used in the reporting of results.
The survey results show that the image Helsinki has among Swedes as the Design Capital is not very good. This depends mostly on the fact that most Swedes are unaware of the World Design Capital concept and therefore did not know that Helsinki has the honour of carrying the title in 2012. Even though the Swedes indeed found about WDC, it did not give them a bigger reason to visit Helsinki than usual. The survey also showed that the marketing of WDC in Stockholm was quite bad.
