Leadership is a very large area that requires us to both understand ourselves and the people around us. We need to have knowledge of leadership, but above all we need to understand the psychological aspects which form the foundations of our behavior in various situations.
Through the author`s own experiences of accidents and incidents onboard, a solid interest has emerged in the topics covered here: psychology, leadership and safety. I have tried to devise the work from the perspective as a seaman and the situation onboard.
The contents of this work have been devised according to literature that the writer believes to be of great importance to know. The work covers the basics of psychology - the science behind our behavior, and about the leadership the basics of how to go about influencing others, and various relevant aspects to be considered here.
About the safety, a number of headings have been selected, which include the human factor, risk attitudes, management systems, accident investigation and disaster psychology.
My personal goal with this work is to deepen my knowledge in behavioral science – to understand other people and to the extent possible to identify those areas that could be important to develop in the existing education for marine officers and engineers.
The content of this work is not limited to people with managerial position but it affects everybody within an organization – leaders and team members.
As an annex (1) the reader can find a questionnaire in which the content is devised based on information found in this work. This questionnaire has been distributed to a number of people with a marine command post and the intention here is to identify whether the officers of today have knowledge of the subjects treated in this work. Conclusions adopted for this survey can be found within this work.
The work is a mission of the educational institute Aboa Mare AB, which educates marine masters and marine engineers in Turku, Finland.
