Abstract:
The global market is uniting countries all around the world. This is leading to that our mutual world market is growing, and because of this transportation and distributions of
merchandise is becoming more and more important. To import merchandise from Asia to Finland with the help of containers demands a large amount of know-how, and with the right amount of know-how the importer has a possibility to save both money and time.
The intention of this thesis is to help the importer to import merchandise from Asia to Finland. As there is no one right way to import merchandise, although there are things that the importer can do to relieve the process in its self for themselves and possibly for their forwarder. This handbook describes all the parties that are involved in the import process, what their affects and responsibilities are. Even other things are mentioned in the handbook that is important to know before the importer stars importing, for example the Incoterms 2010 and their impact on the transportation. It is also important that the importer puts herself into the subject of the difference between FCL and LCL shipments, how are they supposed to be handled and what do they need from the importer.
Price fixing for FCL and LCL shipments differs for each other, FCL shipments are priced by the shipping lines, when LCL shipments fallow the tariff method. When the importer understands the background for FCL and LCL shipments and their cost structures, then they have a better chance to negotiate a better transportation price. In this thesis there are applied price comparison cost structures for both FCL and LCL shipments, with these the importer can better understand offers that are based on weight and cubic meters, and they even have the possibility to calculate the total transport cost by themselves.
The theory in the thesis is based on secondary data and the experience of an import assistant. Own experienced events are more valuable to the importer, when they get a down-to-earth understandable meaning of what it means to import merchandise from Asia.
