When a woman has been pregnant for around 40 weeks and experienced childbirth she enters the postpartum period. During the postpartum period the woman’s body returns to the same state as before the pregnancy. Quality of life consists of four life spheres. The four life spheres comprise of personal resources; resources in social relationships and support; economical resources and ecological, societal together with political resources. The purpose of this study was to describe from a salutogenic bound which physical, psychological and social factors contribute to a woman’s quality of life during the postpartum period. The study has two research questions: 1) How do women experience quality of life during the postpartum period? 2) In what way do physical, psychological and social factors support a woman’s quality of life after delivery? These questions were answered by a systematic literature review. In the study fifteen scientific studies were included and critically reviewed. The studies were published between 2006 and 2011 and were written in Swedish, Finnish or English. The results showed that many women experience relatively good quality of life during the postpartum period but the level of quality of life vary throughout the postpartum period. Social support from family, friends and close relationships has an essential significance for quality of life in the postpartum period. Physical and psychological factors such as exercise, a woman’s self-care and the ability to trust one’s own instincts are being associated with quality of life. Quality of life is a complex concept and comprises several spheres of a woman’s life during the postpartum period.
