The purpose of this thesis was to study disabled people’s individual experiences of the effect of Supported Employment on their inclusion in society. With the help of my study I wanted to find out if working in the open labor market affects disabled people’s social inclusion as well as what their thoughts about the future are.
In the theoretical part of the study the terms functional impairment, functional disability and handicap are described, as well as the terms inclusion, integration and equality. Furthermore, the importance of work is outlined and the principles of Normalization and Supported Employment are described.
I have interviewed disabled people working in the open labor market through Supported Employment and interpreted the answers in the empirical part of the thesis. The results showed that all the interviewed experienced work as activating, stimulating and motivating as well as a contributing factor to feeling included in society.
