Abstract
The documentary”Du som inte fanns” is a beautiful film about two women who have suffered through abuse and abandonment by their fathers. It approaches the subject in a new and artistic way through imaginary images and music, combining fiction and reality. With this movie we want to express our more artistic sides as filmmakers. In this paper I will analyze my work both as a producer and screenwriter, but above all I will concentrate on analyzing the fine line between fiction and documentary. Are there documentaries that are completely fiction-free? I will analyze the different fictional parts in our film and whether or not they contribute to the narrative. I will also analyze other documentaries and the fictional aspects of them, focusing on a movie called”Lumikko” (The little snow animal) which was our biggest inspiration when making this movie. Through my analysis I will conclude that there is no such a thing as a documentary without fiction. I will also claim that fiction in a documentary only adds to the story as it directly illuminates the intentions and opinions of the filmmakers.
