The study investigates both which these factors that affect the environment in consulting firms are and what proceedings the firms can take to create sustainable development. The thesis is a case survey about KPMG Oy Ab. KPMG:s environmental impact is clarified and suggestions for improvement are given on basis of the results in the empirical part.
The applied methods are participant observation, case survey and collection of data from reports, calculations, bills etc. Some data was however not to be found because of lacking measuring instruments and therefore are some values averages estimated on calculations or indexes while other values are exact indicators. The data is not collected from earlier than 2007.
The results of the survey show that staff and offices are the main influencing factors of consultancy firms and KPMG. But those factors sub-categories are found in terms of energy- and water consumption, waste production, buildings, office supplies and travel.
At KPMG, the biggest polluting factor is the energy consumption and second worst the travel by airplane. The Energy consumption accounts for over 50% of CO2 emissions and includes both electricity and energy for heating and cooling. Since 2007 it is only the energy consumption that has not decreased noticeably.
The main suggestions for improvement given to KPMG are to reconvene the environ-mental team, get the board to support it, and to take up the internal environmental work. The team’s mission should include training, briefing, motivating and supporting the staff’s environmental awareness and actions. The following environmental goal is a 15% reduction in Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions per FTE by 2015. This goal will be achieved through a strategic focus on building efficiency, sustainable IT and responsible travel.
