Tiivistelmä
Jokaisella on oikeus harrastukseen. Opinnäytetyön taidetekona on duetto nimeltä Seinäs. Työn ensimmäisessä luvussa esitellään työn aihe sekä taustoja aiheen valinnalle. Toisessa luvussa perehdytään vammaisuuden ja kehitysvammaisuuden käsitteisiin sekä tarkastellaan yhden yleisimmän kehitysvammadiagnoosin, Downin oireyhtymän, tyypillisiä piirteitä. Kolmannessa luvussa käsitellään aluksi erityisoppilaan tarpeita liikunnan harrastamisessa. Everyone has the right to have a hobby they enjoy. Dance is a hobby that can be adapted for everyone. The need for a hobby is especially great among people with disabilities. In this written work the author uses a group interview and written literature to find out about the possibilities of dance for young people with intellectual disabilities in Finland. The first chapter presents the subject area of the research and gives background to why this specific topic was chosen. The second chapter introduces the concepts of general disabilities and intellectual disabilities. This chapter also describes the known causes and typical features of one of the most common diagnoses, Down Syndrome. Chapter three articulates the main topic of the research. It looks into the importance of dancing for a young adult with an intellectual disability, focusing on the physical, mental and social aspects. The author describes what should be taken into consideration when teaching children with intellectual disabilities and these children’s challenges in physical training. The concentration is on dance as a hobby, rather than a form of therapy (dance therapy). The research also explores dance styles that are best suitable for young people with intellectual disabilities and how a dance teacher can make any dance style more accessible for everyone. The fourth chapter examines the current situation of dance for people with special needs in Finland. It brings forth the need for special dance education, and also describes the reality of what is being done to develop and increase dancing possibilities for young people with disabilities. The author briefly comments upon what is expected from a special dance education teacher and his / her possibilities of studying further in this field. The written work ends with the author’s final thoughts about the research process and some expectations for the future of special dance
education.
