The development of mobile applications has recently gained more interest among private developers and small businesses when new methods of distribution for mobile applications have been introduced to the market. Today's smart phones have access to so-called app stores from where developers can upload and sell their software. In the store, the user can browse for content that raises the most interest and then download it, for free or for a small payment. Therefore, developers should evaluate what kind of options they have for distribution and how they can use the current marketplace. The purpose of this study was to examine how the distribution of mobile applications made to the application stores the Apple App Store, Android Market and Ovi Store. The method used is a qualitative study, current literature was reviewed to find theories that are consistent with empirical data and to identify the development tools that are available. A study was conducted to see what methods a finnish game company has used in the process. An expert interview was also made to support the investigation.
