The aim of this study is to describe touching as a part of nursing and to study the meaning of it in elderly care. This study includes elderly patients and excludes touching within alternative nursing care. The research questions are: How is touch being experienced in elderly care? What kind of a role does touch have in elderly care?
To increase the understanding of and to deepen the meaning of touch for the patients, the author has chosen to do a systematic literature review of both qualitative and quantitative articles. Databases used in search of material are: Cinahl, Academic Search Elite, PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library. The chosen material consists of ten scientific articles and the background material consists of evidence based research and professional literature. The analysis of the articles has been made inspired by the content analysis of Graneheim and Lundman (2004). The theoretical framework is provided by Katie Eriksson´s suffering theory, consisting suffering in sickness, nursing and life. The result shows that touch basically consists positive experiences for most elderly patients. Touch is an important part of nursing care and the effects are often multidimensional. The professional skill of nurses and the ethical perspective is essential when producing good and qualitative nursing care. Further research is recommended in the area. The study is referred to an Arcada project Mötas på svenska.
