This thesis is a literature review dealing with the whole family’s health when a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The aim of the study is to illustrate how the family experiences the child's, aged 0-6 years, diabetes and how the whole family's health is affected during the first year after diagnosis. The study's central question is therefore: "How is the family's health affected when the child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?"
Analysis material for the study has been collected from the databases Academic Serch Elite, Cinahl, Medline and Sage. Ten scientific researches were selected. An inductive content analysis by Kyngäs & Vanhanen (1999) is used as the method for analyzing the data. Katie Eriksson's ontological health model (1995) provides the theoretical framework.
The result is divided into three main categories: diagnostic phase and the time at the hospital, adapting the disease into everyday life and long-term adaptation. Results show that the child's diabetes affects the whole family. The disease often comes as a shock to the parents and they have difficulties accepting the disease. To adapt the disease into daily life requires many lifestyle changes for the whole family. The results also show that parents worry about child health and are afraid of hypoglycemia. One year after the diagnosis the family experience that diabetes is a part of their everyday life and they are able to
live a normal life.
