The purpose of this thesis is to describe the experiences of mothers of twins and triplets during pregnancy, birth and the first few weeks with the children. The respondents want to find answers to the following questions in their thesis: How did the mothers experience receiving the information that they were pregnant with more than one baby? How did the mothers experience the pregnancy and birth? How have the mothers experienced the first few weeks with the twins or triplets? The data collection was done through thematic interviews with seven mothers. The results were interpreted according to the theoretical frame of reference, motherhood according to Mercer and parenthood according to Lundgren and Berg, and to earlier research and the theoretical background.
The results showed, among other things, that the information that they were to have multiple children caused a shock reaction in most of the mothers. While they felt happy and privileged they also felt anxiety over possible complications and over the feeling of not being enough. The pregnancy was for most of the mothers a time for preparation that they used to talk to others in the same situation. Most of the mothers thought that the contact with others was very rewarding, but many expressed a wish that the maternity clinic would advise them that there are mother support groups on the internet and a wish for better brochures about multiple parenthood. The birth was for most of the mothers tough due to the Caesarean section and the separation from the children. The first few weeks spent with the children has for most of them been a overwhelming time with many challenges but also much happiness.
