The purpose of this thesis is to look at the communication between the director and the cinematographer and how it affects the end result of the production. This is accomplished through participant observation in the case study of ”Gula Huset”. As the cinematographer I wanted to study the dialogue between me and the director, whether it’s of any importance for the production and if lack of communication could harm the final result. The documentary was shot during the autumn of 2009 throughout spring 2010 and the study is based on the conversations between me and the director and other written sources I’ve found relevant. A main source has been Lars Karlsson’s book Psykologins Grunder, recommended as university literature for psychology students. The empirical research in my study shows that communication is of essence for the productions success but is harder achieved than suspected. My conclusion is that the workflow and the quality of the recorded material will improve with a good communication.
