The aim of this study is to describe what Southern Finland could offer to support the development of tourism in Helsinki, and investigate how areas in Southern Finland best could take advantage of each other. Cooperation inside the region and combining different areas makes it possible to build up a greater range of products, which will make the region as a whole more attractive. The Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau wants the tourists to stay in Helsinki and make daytrips to sights in the surroundings of Helsinki, because this strategically has an extending effect on their stay in Helsinki.
To reach the aim of the study the resources in the area are mapped out, it is investigated what products are needed in the region, and it is examined how the cooperation in Southern Finland works nowadays. The themes for the survey are city breaks, nature tourism and sightseeing tours. The theoretical part of the study manages product development, marketing, attraction of destinations, networking and consumer behaviour. The theoretical part works as a frame of reference to the qualitative survey. The 16 respondents represent tourist information bureaus and regional tourismorganisations in 13 areas in Southern Finland. The interviews are performed on the workplaces of the respondents and transcribed in their entirety.
The result of the survey shows that Southern Finland has a lot to offer and that there are resources that constitute a good potential to develop tourism further. There is a lot of cooperation and networking within the tourism industry in Southern Finland, and cooperation is appreciated and considered important. The domestic market is the main market for all areas represented in the survey, but there is a will to put more effort in reaching also foreign markets in the future. It is important to develop the products so that they have the quality needed and keep up what marketing promises. A common sales system would make it easier for visitors to reach the whole region.
