The purpose of this poll was to, from a family home’s perspective, describe their experiences regarding support from social services and how the relation to the biological family may affect the task of foster caring and in what ways the social services may support the family home. The study has a qualitative approach and is based upon interviews conducted with 3 family homes who have had the task of foster caring for more then five years.
The questions in the interview were designed with regard of my purpose and had emphasis on how the family home’s experiences of the cooperation and support given by social services/social service employees and the experienced relation with the biological family.
The analyse and conclusion of the study rely on Swedish research and my own experiences as a family home.
I have discovered that family homes experience shortcomings in information regarding the biological family and the tutoring and support from social services is generally considered poor.
My conclusion is that there need for a change in the support and also the tutoring from the social services, especially after initiating a family home assignment. Furthermore I have discovered that for a foster care placement to be successful it is important that a good relationship with social service personal and biological family is crucial.
Social services should pay attention to the family home’s inputs and assimilate the knowledge they posses regarding the child and consider the family home as associates. Finally i wish to send a request to the deciding politicians in the municipality; do not allow the family home’s to lose heart and interest in other people, instead, take part in the process of creating commitment and good relations!
Key word: family home’s experiences – network – relations – foster child – family work
