Abstract
Diabetes is a global health issue. Glucose monitoring devices can aid in the treatment of diabetics. Ahead of testing such medical devices on users, its safety and intended performance must be verified. Medical devices need to comply to regulatory framework IEC 60601-1. This work presents the design of a reconfigurable automated test system for a non-invasive glucose monitoring device. The associated software uses modular design principles. The functionality of the device requires exerting a current into the skin of the user to extract interstitial fluid. The majority of the test set is designed to verify that this functionality complies with IEC 60601-1. The modularity and reconfigurability of the software are evaluated using a Design Structure Matrix, and the test system with the implemented test cases is put through pilot testing and a reliability testing protocol. Furthermore, the distribution of the measurement data acquired from the reliability tests is analyzed. The result of the work is a test system with interchangeable hardware and test cases. The associated software consists of six interchangeable modules, each with a varying number of classes. The test system along with the test cases are deemed to be sufficiently reconfigurable and reliable for its purposes. A noteworthy limitation of the developed system is the low signal-to-noise ratio of low-level leakage current measurements. Future developments include replacing hardware components to measure low-level currents and adding temperature and humidity sensors to the test system. This work can be used as a benchmark in safety evaluations of glucose monitoring devices.
