Abstract
Hanke on osa Karhulan keskusta-alueen laajempaa kehityssuunnitelmaa.

This thesis presents a plan for the new school centre in Kotka Karhula. In the spring of 2022, the City of Kotka in cooperation with the Finnish Architects Association Safa organized an open architecture competition for the school centre, and this work is based on the competition proposal designed by the author. Karhula is the northern district of Kotka, and it functions as a local service centre for more than 20 000 Kotka residents. The new school centre will be a public multipurpose building enhancing Karhula’s identity, and it will serve users of all ages from morning to night. The project is a part of a wider development plan for the central area of Karhula. The new school centre offers teaching facilities for Karhula and Helilä junior high schools and Karhula high school. In addition to this, it contains facilities for the Karhula library and the Kotka city’s youth services. The building is planned as an extension to the Karhula school building “kivikoulu”, which was completed in 1960 and is located on the competition site. The design of the school centre presented in the thesis was primarily guided by the wishes and requirements presented in the competition program, but also by current trends and design principles in school design. A small-scale approach in terms of cityscapes and consideration of the local built cultural heritage were selected as the basis for the design work. The pedagogical starting points of the plan are based on flexible and multi-purpose overall spatial concept. These themes guided the thought process during the preparation of the competition proposal and when the plan was refines in the thesis. The author’s competition proposal “Yksi plus kolme” was awarded with honorary mention. Further development after the competition was resolved focused on comprehensively clarifying the plan and refining the spatial program. The work examines Karhula’s built history, early plans of the city centre, and their influence on the starting points of the design. In his work, the author also examines the pedagogical features of new school buildings, spatial concepts, and architecture through example cases, and analyses the ideas acquired from these reference schools into his own design. The work envisions the future of school and multipurpose buildings through the realization of pedagogical goals and prioritizing high urban quality. The final part of the thesis contains reflections on participating in the architectural competition, and the related work and thought process as well as the use of time.
