Abstract
Taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyöni, Idän ihmemaa, käsittelee dokumentaariseen valokuvaan liittyviä eettisiä ongelmia. Idän ihmemaa pohtii representaation ja tulkinnan ongelmia kulttuurisen vähemmistön valokuvaamisessa Puhoksen ostoskeskuksessa. Perinteisen dokumentaarisen valokuvauksen lisäksi projekti saa erilaisia muotoja, joissa tutkitaan niihin liittyviä teoreettisia ja käytännöllisiä kysymyksiä. Idän Ihmemaa on taiteellinen tutkimus, jonka taiteellinen osio kulkee tekstin lomassa. Kolmas luku, Sosiaalisen median sankarit, tutkii TikTok-videoiden esiin nostamia teoreettisia kysymyksiä.

My Master of Arts thesis, The Wonderland of the East, deals with ethical issues related to documentary photography. The Wonderland of the East explores the problems of representation and interpretation in photographing a cultural minority in the Puhos shopping center. In addition to traditional documentary photography, the project takes a variety of forms to explore related theoretical and practical issues. The Wonderland of East is an artistic study, the artistic part of which runs through the text. The first part explores the concept of documentary photography in relation to the characteristics associated with it, such as narrative, aesthetics, and truthfulness. In addition, it reflects how the concepts used in the Afro-American discourse about being between two cultures and seeing oneself through the eyes of the cultural majority are suitable for understanding the social reality of people of colour in Finland today. The second part, The Latitude of Sorrow, explores the idea of a nation-state and the history of racism in the West. The thought patterns derived from Hegel's philosophy of history and Darwin's theory of evolution have influenced the perception of Western culture in relation to other cultures and peoples. Edward Said’s theories of orientalism and otherness help to understand how a homogeneous image of orient has been created in the West to justify its colonization. Ethnographic photographs from an old racial non-fiction book are used as material in the works of The Latitude of Sorrow. The purpose of the works is to show how photography has been and is being used to highlight cultural differences and to create the concept of race and justification of colonial power. The works of The Latitude of Sorrow were included in the Masters of Arts 2022- exhibition, and the installation photographs of the works are a continuation of the second section. The third chapter, Heroes of Social Media, explores the theoretical issues raised by TikTok videos. The work examines cultural identity and its formation in social media representations. The carnivalistic appearance of the protagonist in TikTok videos challenges us to consider the concept and demand for normativity in Finnish culture, and how the videos can affect the minority's perception of their own role and identity. In the fourth chapter, the documentary project develops into a community art project in the form of a pop-up studio. The theme of the section is the sharing of authorship and influencing the stereotypical imagery by collectively producing empowering representations of individuals and the minority community.
