Abstract
Surface roughness and surface texture are key contributors to friction and wear. Microprobes are small, responsive tactile surface roughness sensors made from single-crystal silicon. The microprobe features a cantilever with a stylus and a strain gauge to measure the deflection of the cantilever. The intent of this thesis is to explore potential and complications of microprobes, with an industrial environment in mind. To characterize the microprobe, four different ISO 12179 calibration measurements were performed. Two additional stability benchmarks were performed to compare results between research groups. A printed circuit board (PCB) was developed based on a design provided by Technische Universität Braunschweig to control the microprobe. A mechanical structure was designed and constructed around the microprobe and PCB for the measurements. A transportation box was designed and 3D-printed for safer transportation of the microprobe. The microprobe has the potential to perform very precise measurements of 10–20 nm under perfect conditions. External influences can greatly affect the precision of the microprobe. Detecting features smaller than 200 nm might not be possible in an industrial environment, as they can be indistinguishable from external vibrations and background noise. The microprobe is sensitive to multiple external influences. Factors that can be noticed in the results are: the number of people in the room; opening and closing the room door; and covering the measurement with a cloth. The microprobe is fragile. During attachment and bonding to PCBs, five microprobes broke. One bonding wire was detached, requiring repair; after it was dropped while unfastened in its transportation box. Two microprobes have been produced to a usable state and used in for this thesis. This evaluation is part of the EU funded EMPIR project 17IND05 MicroProbes “Multi-functional ultrafast microprobes for on-the-machine measurements”.
